From a seafaring family, María del Carmen Díaz is the third generation of ship fitters, as her grandmother Carmen Navas Navarra was a seine-fishing vessel fitter in the Andalusian Mediterranean. She now represents the artisan fishing sector in the National Artisan Fishing Federation FENAPA, which was created in 2018. 

Díaz also founded the VENUS NUX association to protect the fishing sector in the Andalusian Mediterranean, and the National Association of Women in Fishing ANMUPESCA, and has developed a practical teaching method aboard coastal fishing vessels.
