The seine-fishing tuna fleet and artisan fishing, at Meeting of the Seas
Roderick Sloan, chef and sea urchin fisherman in Norway's Arctic; María del Carmen Díaz, president of Spain's Artisan Fishing Federation, nd Laura Rodríguez Zugasti, running the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for Spain and Portugal, among others, will talk about the seine-fishing tuna fleet and artisan fishing.
The fishing sector is another of the event's leading themes, and will be represented this year by personalities such as Roderick Sloan, chef and sea urchin fisherman in Norway's Arctic. This Scottish chef knows every inch of the water around the Norwegian Arctic, where he works to make fishing sustainable. Sloan has lived and worked on the Steigen peninsula in the Norwegian Arctic for the last 20 years. Since he works with some of the world's best seafood, Sloan has earned himself a reputation in the course of the last decade by supplying his produce to some of Europe's best restaurants, and has an intimate working relationship with René Redzepi's Noma in Copenhagen. He has also given lessons on seafood to young chefs at educational workshops in cookery schools throughout Europe. All his work is motivated by sustainable fishing for long-term growth, and he has made a stand for this publicly in the Arctic and all over the world.
Julio Morón, president of the seine-fishing tuna fleet, and one of the world's leading experts on tunids, and María del Carmen Díaz, president of Spain's Artisan Fishing Federation, third generation of ship fitters and member of the National Association of Fishery Women, will be speaking at the event, along with Laura Rodríguez Zugasti, who has been running the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for Spain and Portugal since 2010. MSC is an international NGO created to bring an end to overfishing with a leading programme in sustainable fishing certification and labelling. Her work centres on fostering environmental sustainability in the fishing sector and the sea produce value chain, and on implementing initiatives and raising public awareness on conservation of the oceans. She is also a founding partner and member of the Board of the association of expert female sustainability managers Women Action Sustainability.
